IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO OUR SUMMER LEAGUE PLAYERS AND FAMILIES

8/1/2020

We are writing as a follow up to our most recent email regarding our outdoor summer league.  We want to thank all of our players, parents, coaches, referees, spectators and fans for stepping up to the challenges we issued in our efforts to ensure the ongoing health and safety of our community.  We know that these matters are not easy to navigate; and that it’s natural to want to turn even an inch of breathing room into a mile.  That being said, having weighed up all of our goals and responsibilities, we have decided to move the balance of the season indoors,  Simply put, our concern is that the outdoor use of masks, crowd control and general social distancing remains too difficult for us to police; and we cannot in good conscience keep things as is and say that we our doing our part serving the community’s best interests.  Of course, if anyone has any questions, please do not hesitate to be in touch with us.  We look forward to resuming outdoor play in the future, as the environment returns to something closer to “normal”.  With deep gratitude, and wishes of continuing PEACE and health,

Beginning Monday, August 3, ALL remaining games - Middle & High School - will be played at the Yerwood Center, 90 Fairfield Ave.  Game times remain the same.

League Overview

The Summer League @ Scalzi Park is designed to provide a positive sports experience.  The primary purpose is to offer each participant the opportunity to pursue, through recreational basketball, the physical and emotional benefits of the sport.  Our goal is for all players to have the opportunity to gain new skills, make new friends and have fun.

The emphasis is on good sportsmanship, proper conduct, and following the rules and policies of the Summer League. Although competition is a natural part of sports activities, winning is not the primary goal.  We want not only our participants, but also our coaches and fans, to play fairly and respect each other.  Cheer for one’s triumphs and not for their shortcomings.  Win with grace and lose with dignity.  Encourage others always to do their best and try their hardest.

MEMO: 7/8/2020

Summer League Players and Families,

As always, we’re hoping this finds you and your families healthy and safe.  Of course, the past few months have been filled with stress and uncertainty, and we are all doing our part to keep up and make the best decisions we can in light of the information that’s currently available.

Despite the progress we are seeing with certain businesses reopening, the City of Stamford Recreation Department has concluded that based upon Governor Lamont’s recent postponement of “Reopening Phase 3”, for the time being the City would continue to keep their public parks free of basketball games.  As a result, we have been forced to temporarily halt our Summer League.

We are working behind the scenes with the City of Stamford and the Mayor’s Office to determine a date when they will restore the rims on our outdoor courts, allowing us to resume play.  In fact, the Governor’s office has given our Summer League their stamp of approval.

What does all this mean?

As of today, July 9th, the Summer League is “on hold”.

When will our Summer League begin?

Uncertain.  Rest assured, we will continue to do all we can to get the Summer League started as soon as possible – while adhering to appropriate restrictions, and not sacrificing the health and safety of our participants and staff.  We are hopeful that we can still begin on July 13th, although there can be no guarantees.

Have team rosters been assembled?

Yes, based upon this week’s draft we have assembled teams and rosters.  Your roster, including name and contact information for your coach, will be emailed to you by no later than 7/10 and is also available on our website.

When will we get the game schedule?

As soon as we are cleared to move forward with the League, our full games schedule will be emailed to all players and families as well as posted on our website.

I made payment for the league – now what?

At this point, there is no need for us to provide refunds, as we remain hopeful that we will be cleared to play a full season of outdoor basketball.  Only in the unlikely event that the Summer League has to be cancelled will we refund players their registration fees.

Hoping to have better news for you soon.  We will be in touch.  PEACE!!!
